Scholarship
  • Early warning.  We don’t have many details other than it will be awarded in January to be used for the Spring 2010 semester.  It will not be full tuition, but a partial assistance.  Details will be forthcoming in the next month.
Mentor program
  • List of participants is on the uncwmbaa.org web site with their individual emails . . . mostly class of 2010 and one alumni from 2009.  Available by email for answers to general questions regarding the program, particular professors, papers, tests . . . even used book exchange.
Web site
  • Up and running but still being built for more information & flexibility.  Go register for important updates.
  • Are going to begin posting MBAA board meeting agendas on site so you can see what we’re doing.
  • Also be sure to register UNCW MBA Association as your "friend" on FaceBook.  Several current students as well as a number of alumni are already registered.  Good networking opportunity.

Planned events
  • Third Thursday - instituting an ongoing social networking opportunity after class on the 3rd Thursday of every month.  The venue will change & the next social is at Romanelli’s on Oleander Drive on September 17th (next week!)  Come on out.  The "mentors" mentioned above will be at the social so you can get to know them informally before you send them an awkward, random email.  We’ll also have raffles that haven’t been positively identified, but could include free drinks &/or spa treatments.  We’ll be announcing the venue to you each month via the web site, email and Facebook as well as in person in class, so there’s no excuse for not knowing and not going.
  • Kickball picnic -  Class of 2010 vs. Class of 2011 at Ogden Park on Saturday, October (still not sure but will confirm soon).  Non-alcoholic beverages, hamburgers, hotdogs & condiments will be provided.  We’ll be asking for people to volunteer to bring picnic sides like chips, cole slaw, brownies, etc. so start thinking about what you would like to provide.  Pending an investigation into the drinking policies of the park, you may also be able to bring an adult beverage of your choice but be responsible &/or have a DD available.  This is a family event, so let’s keep it under control ?
  • Holiday gathering - in place of 3rd Thursday during the month of December since 3rd Thursday is after classes are over & many people will be traveling.  It’s going to be Thursday, December 10th after our last final of the year!  Location TBA.  It’s an ugly Christmas sweater party, so bust out your tackiest attire and wear it with pride, regardless of the holiday you ultimately choose to celebrate.  Faculty will be invited.  MBAA members will receive free appetizers and their first drink, additional drinks at your expense.  Non-MBAA members are encouraged to attend and contribute $7 which will help us offset the expense of the appetizers we provide.  All drinks for non-MBAA members will be at your own expense.
  • Golf Tournament - has traditionally been the largest fundraiser for the MBAA and enables us to participate in volunteer activities, provide scholarships, and sponsor panel discussions and job opportunities (we’re working on this one).  Last year’s wasn’t exactly stellar which is why the scholarships are low this year, so we really want this one to be very successful.  The date has not been set yet, but it will be in late March or early April and NOT on Azalea Festival  or Easter Weekend.  We’re giving you this heads up so that you can start thinking about recruiting golf teams from your friends.  Make an early mention of it to your Learning Alliance/Practicum business partner and let them know they can field a team or sponsor a hole.  Maybe your employer or a business you frequent or have an "in" with would like to be a sponsor, donate raffle items, or field a team.  Anyone can participate and we encourage those who have never golfed to come out and give it a try.  You’ll never have a better chance to swing a club.  And if we just can’t talk you into playing, there will also be an after tournament party that everyone can attend regardless of participation on the actual golf course.  More details will be coming but we welcome your ideas.  Please come talk to me if you have any suggestions about how we can make it successful.
  • Business Week - just prior to the golf tourney, UNCW sponsors Business Week in March, but it has always been primarily geared towards undergrads.  We are investigating how students in the MBA program can participate and take advantage of the potential employers visiting campus.  We are also tentatively planning to have a number of MBA students go into local schools during this week to talk briefly about business and give a couple of "life lessons" on personal finance.  We plan to use this opportunity, not only to educate kids, but to raise our visibility and hopefully get a PR boost for the golf tournament.  If you have other ideas or would like to participate, keep an eye on your email inbox and the MBAA Facebook page and website for more information on volunteering.
  • Volunteering -  Hands on Wilmington, now known as Work on Wilmington, is a volunteer opportunity that the MBAA has chosen to give back to the community, and we’d like as many MBA students as possible to participate.  Your entire commitment is 4 hours on a Saturday morning . . . April 17 from 8 to noon, to be exact.  You could be doing things as simple as picking up trash, painting the walls of a community center, or planting flowers outside of a hospice facility.  There is also a volunteer appreciation party afterwards with free food and music.  If you are not able to participate on that day, you have the opportunity to donate materials for the projects.  We will make that list available to you.  Depending upon how successful we are able to make the golf tournament, we may also sponsor the event.  We’ll remind you about it again, but please consider taking a few hours out of your life and giving it back to this city and the people in it who really need it.
