UNC Wilmington Cameron School of Business Listed Among Top Business Schools by Princeton Review

General NewsWilmington, N.C. - The Cameron School of Business at the University of North Carolina Wilmington is listed in the 2008 edition of the "Best 290 Business Schools," published this month by The Princeton Review. It is the first time UNC Wilmington has been included in this annual publication. UNCW's listing focuses on the Master of Business Administration (MBA) program.

The Princeton Review compiles its information from surveys of 19,000 business school students and school-reported data. Strengths of UNCW's program that are highlighted include:

• Hands-on projects with local and regional businesses

• Faculty who are accessible and care about student success

• A high level of student participation and learning coupled with an understanding of the pressures on students who work full-time

• Strong student diversity in experience levels, age and industry segment

"This listing is recognition of the quality and 'real world' focus of our MBA program, which gives students the tools they need to be successful in a variety of business settings," said Dean Larry Clark. "We give our students hands-on experience in actual business situations to help them develop effective decision-making skills."

The program provides much of this business experience through the MBA Learning Alliance, which matches student teams with regional firms for a 13-month study of the firm's business processes and competitive environment. This is followed by an industry practicum, in which students take on a consulting project for a regional business, not-for-profit or public sector organization.

"Working on real projects facing real businesses distinguishes UNCW's MBA program from those of other institutions," said Vince Howe, associate professor of marketing and director of the MBA program.

The Princeton Review agreed, noting that students surveyed said "practical application with actual business" is a strength of the curriculum and also that "the program is evolving and changing as the needs of students change."

Students from any undergraduate background may enroll in the MBA program, and approximately 70 percent of students come from academic fields other than business, including engineering and science. The average age of students in the part-time, evening program is 30, and most are looking to immediately apply their graduate school experience in their current professional positions.

"This program allows students to very quickly apply what they are learning in the classroom in an actual business environment," said George Hollen, president of the MBA Association, who works at PPD in Wilmington. "We learn from experience how a textbook theory will or will not work within a variety of organizations and industries. It's an MBA program specifically designed for the working professional."

UNC Wilmington's new International MBA program, which began in the fall of 2007, is also mentioned in the Princeton Review report. This program, which offers dual degrees with several universities in Spain, Russia and other countries, requires residency abroad and is open to students with undergraduate degrees in business.

Social & Networking Plan for the Year

General NewsGeorge and I have been working on a diverse plan of events for the year coming up and are trying to make decisions based on the results of the survey. (http://www.uncwmbaa.org/survey/results/2007-ideas/statistics.php)

We plan to rotate social events between class nights and non class nights, near the beach, downtown and school, weekends and weekdays, and to try and do something on a Saturday afternoon.

We think you will like the first event, even if you are not a bar person, as the MBAA has a reserved area outside, and there is great 80's band playing for free around the corner on the river after the event.

Also, the response to the survey showed that people are very interested in networking events and speakers. We are planning to have 3 before-class speakers starting this fall with topics related to business.

We are working with the Council for Entrepreneurial Development (CED), the Chamber of Commerce and other organizations to plan events the will compliment your MBA experience.

Please send us your comments and ideas or if you have anyone you would like to have as a speaker their contact information.

MBAA Textbook Fundraiser

General NewsDear Cameron MBAs,

Congratulations on the completion of Summer I, and here’s to a successful Summer II!

As you are considering all the wonderful destruction rituals you could conduct with those old textbooks, consider this:

Donating them to the MBAA will generate money that will be put back into our MBA experience - which might be a better option for you than selling them back to the bookstore.

If you don’t want to keep your books, and you’re not happy selling them back to the bookstore for peanuts, we’d like for you to donate them to us.

Our plan is to sell them at the highest return possible in order to generate cash for some of the MBAA projects we’re planning for this year, like informative guest speakers, social events (both adult and family-oriented), and the annual golf tournament.

One of our goals is to start an emergency grant fund and an anonymous application procedure for any Cameron MBA student who might need financial help during their studies.

If you can help, here’s what to do: Simply drop your books with Anne or Karen in the Graduate Programs Office (CIS building) between now and July 3.

We hope this will be an easy way to get rid of the textbooks you don’t need any more, and it will help us accomplish all the goals we’re pursuing this year.

Best regards,

Ann Berry
Fundraising Chair
MBAA

PS - We plan to update you during summer session II at uncwmbaa.org and via email to let you know how much you helped us raise. Thanks again.
